FAQ

What is electrolysis?

Electrolysis permanently removes hair by treating each individual follicle with a fine, sterile probe and a controlled pulse of electrical current. That tiny pulse creates either heat (thermolysis), a chemical reaction (galvanic), or both (blend), which destroys the cells responsible for growing new hair.

Electrolysis is the only method of hair removal classified by the FDA as truly permanent, and it works on all hair colors and skin tones.

Fun fact: electrolysis was first developed in 1875 to treat ingrown eyelashes!

Is electrolysis really permanent?

Yes! Because hair grows in cycles, the process takes time, but once a follicle is successfully treated, it won’t grow back.

What training do you have?

I’m licensed by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Before opening Zap Daddy, I spent a full year in training, with formal coursework, supervised clinical hours, and hands-on instruction in infection control and safe technique.

New York State doesn’t regulate electrolysis, which means anyone can legally buy a machine and start practicing. I chose to pursue education out of state to hold myself to a higher standard. My license is your assurance that I know how to permanently remove hair without injuring your skin, that I use medical-grade sterilization practices, and that I complete continuing education every year.

What electrolysis modalities do you use?

I’m trained in all electrolysis modalities: thermolysis, blend, and galvanic. They all work to permanently remove hair, but each has its own benefits, trade-offs, and contraindications. We’ll discuss these at your consultation and choose the approach that best fits your specific needs.

What areas can be treated?

Generally speaking, if we can see it, we can treat it! There are just a few exceptions, such as inside your nose and ears.

How long does it take?

The annoying answer is: it depends. Your hair density, texture, growth cycles, hormones, genetics, previous hair removal methods, and the size of the area all influence the timeline.

Hair grows in cycles, so what you see on the surface at any given time may only be 20-30% of the total follicles in that area (even less if you’ve been plucking, waxing, or sugaring). Since we can only treat what’s visible, it often takes about 12–18 months to cycle through and treat them all. Denser and larger areas take longer.

You can expect to see gradual progress throughout: the hair becomes thinner, lighter, sparser, and it grows more slowly. Once we reach your first full clearance – meaning every follicle in the target area has been treated at least once – sessions typically get shorter and less frequent.

Do you treat clients preparing for surgery?

Yes! Helping people prepare for vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, and other procedures that require skin grafts is a big part of my practice.

If you’re getting ready for surgery, please reach out as early as possible so we can plan your treatment schedule and get you hair-free before the big day.

Do you treat clients with PCOS?

Yes! I regularly work with people who have PCOS and other hormone‑related conditions that cause unwanted hair. We’ll talk about your pattern of growth, what's worked (or hasn't) to manage it so far, and build a customized treatment plan for you.

Fun fact: long before I transitioned, I was diagnosed with PCOS. Strangely enough, I never minded the extra hair...

What does electrolysis feel like? Does it hurt?

Everyone's different, and sensitivity can depend on the body part, the day, or even how much coffee you’ve had. Many people describe a quick pinch or sting – generally less intense than waxing, laser, or getting a tattoo.

Most people tolerate electrolysis well without any pain management (and some even fall asleep during treatment!) For those who are more sensitive or working on sensitive areas, there are topical numbing creams available both over-the-counter and by prescription.

It helps to be hydrated, well-rested, and have a snack with some protein beforehand. We can always adjust the settings, change modalities, or slow down the pace. Distraction helps too – you’re welcome to use headphones, or we can listen to something together!

Do you take insurance?

I’m not able to bill insurance directly (it's a goal for the future!), but some clients qualify for insurance reimbursement for electrolysis and and I can provide a properly coded superbill for you to submit.

I know navigating insurance can be hard, and I’m happy to help however I can.

Should I consider laser?

Maybe! Both electrolysis and laser can help with unwanted hair, but they work differently. Laser can be great for quickly reducing density in larger areas, especially if you have lighter skin and dark hair. Electrolysis is permanent and works on every hair and skin color.

If I think you might benefit from starting with laser, I’ll tell you that. My goal is to help you reach your hair removal goals regardless of how you get there.

How do I get started?

Reach out through the contact form or send an email to hi@zapdaddy.studio to schedule a free consultation.

At your first visit, we’ll talk through your goals, review your medical history, and come up with a personalized treatment plan for you. I'll go over how electrolysis works and answer any questions you have. We’ll also do a brief sample treatment so you get a chance to experience the process and decide if it’s right for you!
